Senator’s bipartisan bill – approved by the Homeland Security committee – boosts firefighters’ health benefits

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Senate Homeland Security Committee approved a bipartisan bill cosponsored by Arizona senior Senator Kyrsten Sinema that supports firefighters.

“Wildfires continue to pose serious threats to Arizona communities, and this bipartisan solution strengthens our wildfire response and readiness by providing firefighters’ with the support they’ve earned,” said Sinema, a member of the Senate Homeland Security Committee.

Sinema’s Federal Firefighters Fairness Act – approved by the Homeland Security Committee – fixes current federal workers’ compensation policy, allowing firefighters to receive federal workers’ compensation benefits that include heart disease, lung disease, and select cancers developed by federal firefighters as a direct result of their occupation.
