Coronavirus SICK and emergency LEAVE

Some Arizonans may not be able to go into work if they have been recommended by their health care provider to quarantine at home or in a hospital, need to care for someone who is quarantining, or need to care for their child whose school or daycare is closed. Employees should speak to their employer about what flexible work schedule options or leave options might be available.

Some Arizonans may not be able to go to work because their child’s school or daycare is closed. Employees should speak to their employer about what flexible work schedule options or leave options might be available.

Employers may also be eligible to receive tax credits to offset paid coronavirus sick and family leave provided to employees. UPDATE: On December 21, 2020, Congress passed the Consolidated Appropriations Act to provide further health and economic relief. As a part of that bill, the refundable paid leave credit available to eligible employers was extended through March 31, 2021. The requirement that employers provide coronavirus paid sick and family leave was not extended. The credit will be for eligible employers who voluntarily extend coronavirus paid sick and leave for their families through March 31, 2021.

On March 11, 2021, the American Rescue Plan Act was signed into law, providing essential public health and economic resources to Arizona and the country. Among other important provisions, the new law also extends through September 30, 2021 the tax credits for eligible employers who voluntarily provide coronavirus paid sick and family leave to their workers. The tax credits will be newly available to state and local governments that provide coronavirus leave. Other changes were passed into law to provide the tax credits to more generous leave policies, including:

  • Increasing the wages covered by the paid family leave credit to $12,000 per worker, from $10,000.
  • Covering as many as 60 days of paid family leave for self-employed individuals, instead of 50.
  • Expanding the paid leave credits, including for self-employed individuals, to cover coronavirus vaccinations or wait times for test results or diagnoses.

More information as it becomes available from the IRS will be on their website.
